How to Order a Custom Cake — Everything You Need to Know
So you’ve decided you want a custom cake. Excellent decision. Whether it’s a wedding, a milestone birthday, a baby shower, or a corporate event, a bespoke cake is one of those details that guests remember long after the party is over. But if you’ve never ordered a custom cake before, the process might feel a little mysterious. Where do you even start?
Don’t worry — I’ve got you. Here’s exactly how ordering a custom cake from Save Me Some Cake works, from your very first message through to the moment your cake arrives at the party.
Step 1: Get in Touch
The first step is simply reaching out. You can contact me through the Contact page on this website, or via the link in my Instagram or Facebook profiles — whichever is easiest for you.
Don’t stress about having everything figured out at this stage. A rough idea of what you’re after, your event date, and an approximate guest count is plenty to get the conversation started.
One important note: my calendar fills quickly, especially for weekends and peak celebration seasons. So the earlier you reach out, the better your chances of securing your date!
Step 2: Let’s Have a Chat
Once I receive your enquiry, I’ll be in touch by email to arrange a time to have a proper conversation about your cake. This is one of my favourite parts of the process — getting to understand what you’re envisioning and what will make your event truly special.
To make the most of our chat, it helps if you can start gathering a few ideas beforehand. A reference image (or a handful of them) is genuinely one of the most useful things you can bring to this conversation. Scrolling through Pinterest, Instagram, or even just saving photos you love from anywhere online is a great way to start building a picture of the style you’re drawn to.
I want to be clear about how I use reference images: I never copy another baker’s work. What the images help me understand is your concept — the colours, the mood, the level of detail, the overall aesthetic. From there, I create something that’s entirely original and made just for you.
Step 3: The Details That Shape Your Cake
During our chat, I’ll ask you a few key questions to make sure your cake is exactly right. Here’s what I’ll need to know:
- The date and time of your event — this determines everything from my baking schedule to delivery logistics.
- When you’d like the cake to be ready — mid-morning or mid-afternoon? This matters more than you might think, especially for tiered cakes that need time to settle.
- How many people it needs to feed — and whether you’d like coffee serves (smaller, finger-food style portions) or dessert serves (generous slices for people who mean business when it comes to cake).
- Any dietary requirements — whether it’s gluten free, egg free, or plant-based options needed, I want everyone at your table to be able to enjoy a slice.
- Flavour preferences — this is the fun part! From rich chocolate mud cake to light vanilla with raspberry buttercream, I’ll help you land on a combination your guests will love.
Step 4: Your Quote
After our conversation, I’ll put together a personalised quote based on your design, size, flavours, and any special requirements. I aim to make the quote clear and easy to understand — no surprises.
If you have any questions about the quote or want to tweak anything, just ask. I’m always happy to talk through options.
Step 5: Locking It In
Once you’re happy with the quote, a deposit is required to secure your booking. Until the deposit is paid, the date remains open to other enquiries — so once you’re ready to go ahead, don’t wait too long!
The final payment is due 14 days before your event. I’ll be in touch around that time to confirm the remaining details and take care of the balance.
Step 6: The Home Stretch
In the week of your event, I’ll reach out to let you know that your cake is on track and that everything is going smoothly. We would already have discussed at the time of booking whether I’ll be delivering your cake or whether you’ll be collecting it — so there won’t be any last-minute surprises there.
I’ll also give you a courtesy call or message the day before your event, just to confirm the final arrangements. Because the lead-up to a big celebration is already busy enough, and the last thing you need to be doing is chasing anyone.
Ready to Get Started?
Ordering a custom cake should be exciting, not stressful — and I work hard to make sure the whole experience feels that way from start to finish.
If you’ve got an event coming up and you’d like to talk about a cake, I’d love to hear from you. Head to the Contact page or find me on Instagram or Facebook to get the conversation started.
I can’t wait to create something special for you. 🎂
